Annabel is known to many as Aggi from The Pastels and Tom has been a member of The Pastels for the last three years as well as playing guitar in Appendix Out (Drag City). International Airport should not be viewed as a side project of The Pastels in that their contributions to The Pastels are somewhat restricted since The Pastels is mainly the brainchild of Stephen Pastel. Tom and Aggie began collaborating shortly after he joined The Pastels and have issued one single on the fledgling All City record label. Nothing we can control is their debut record and was recorded by Tom in his flat at home in Glasgow. Recording at home offered Tom and Aggi the time and opportunity to bring in a variety of folks to help flesh out the bands still developing sound. From the unknown (Cari Anderson and Stephen Aston) to the little well know (Aki Okauchi of the band Incense) to the more well known (Ali Roberts of Appendix Out and Mick Cooke of Belle and Sebeastian) the "band" takes many shapes, sizes and at times sounds. Tom and Aggi traveled to Chicago in March of this year to mix the record with John McEntire (Stereolab, Tortoise) at his Soma Studio and mastered the disc at London's famed Abbey Road studios. Nothing we can control is a wondrous ride through the "la, la, la's" of Stereolab to the more pastoral visions of a Scottish country side-think Morricone through Power Tools, yet at the same time bringing it back down to basics occasionally for a standard vocals, guitar, drums, bass pop song. While one half of the record employs vocals (both Tom and Aggi sing), the other half of nothing we can control bobs and weaves it's way through some sonic cut and paste reminiscent of Mouse on Mars and Kid Loco. It's equal enjoyment for the Wire crowd and the Magnet kids or think of it as two genres meshed together seamlessly to double the listening enjoyment.
