Simple controls let your entire family play together, while advanced controls let you take advantage of Wii MotionPlus. Swing, fl ip, and spike your way to the winner's circle across all of the included events: Indoor Volleyball, Racquetball, Air Racing, Freestyle Kayaking, Lacrosse, Fencing, Halfpipe (Snowboarding), Giant Slalom (Skiing), Springboard Diving, and even Log Cutting! This time around, you can play online in 4 events (Volleyball, Lacrosse, Racquetball, & Fencing)! HIGHLIGHTS(): Springboard diving Let's start with the weirdest, by far. You're treated to the sexy delights of your seven polygon jumble-a-thon of a character casually walking up to the diving board like a rusty robot. They take a little jump, bounce, then jump up again and what is this. The game suddenly jerks into slow motion, complete with the whole 'bullet-time' sound effect to signify time has slowed down. This is followed by a funky, deep bass beat. Now symbols are appearing on-screen like some kind of demonic banishment, and it turns out you have to trace over them with the Wii Remote. The quicker you 'draw' them in mid-air, the smaller your splash will be. Very true to life. Air racing Here you're flying through checkpoints, matching the required orientation (shown as you begin to approach each gate) by tilting the plane with the Wii Remote. It worked well, and was pretty fun! Of course, the first thing I did was go completely off-course and see if I could reach the cruise ship seen in the background. Alas, invisible barriers. The plane would even automatically fly back with a fancy camera angle. Surely the work of Andross, no doubt. Lacrosse Lacrosse was very enjoyable, because it was so... bizarre. Picture an entire match of the same two players continuously hurling the ball to each other in an attempt to just get it in their opponent's goal. For such simplified controls, they sure didn't make a whole lot of sense. "I'm going to try and score!" "No, you're going to pass it to me instead!" "Okay! Wait, what just happened?" "Here, take the ball back now" "I've already gone home, but okay, chuck it here" "Haha! We're in a lacrosse team!" Canoe slalom Mercury got the hang of this one, I didn't (naturally!) Something along the lines of motioning the Wii Remote as if you're actually paddling a canoe down the wet speedway of river rapids. If you fail to clear a hanging gate, there's a slim chance of being able to turn around and frantically paddle back upstream. The water in this event looks really nice, it's almost completely out of place when compared to everything else. My favourite part was managing to get the canoe wedged between two pillars; I'm not sure the developers had ever accounted for such a situation to occur. Sports Island 3 got mad at me and eventually glitched the canoe back out. Phew, day saved! Volleyball Hooooooly crap. This is it. This is why a write-up for Sports Island 3 came to life. Volleyball is absolutely amazing. Everything comes together so, so well. Neither Mercury or I could figure out the controls, but that's just where the fun started. Flicking the Wii Remote up twice would generally serve, but there didn't seem to be any way to get a feel for the power of your shot, so the ball would often hit the net, or even better, just dribble from their hands. When you screw up in volleyball, your team lets you know in serious style. Some players dramatically drop to their knees and pound the ground with their fist (all in unison with the same canned animation), as if the court had taken a loved one away from them. When we actually had a rally going, it would usually end with the ball slamming into someone's face. The characters don't react to this at all, they just keep their extremely stern facial expression as if nothing had happened. Everything about volleyball is unintentionally hilarious. Also, it may have been our imaginations, but it seemed like the blurry mish-mash of a crowd in the stands were getting more and more quiet as the match 'progressed'. Volleyball is the reason Sports Island 3 needs to be experienced at least once at every Wii multiplayer-related box social party gathering. Log cutting Welp, time to wrap this up I think. Sports Island 3 launches in Australia October 14.
